Spatial Decorrelation in Orientation-Selective Cortical Cells
نویسندگان
چکیده
We propose a model for the lateral connectivity of orientation-selective cells in the visual cortex. We study the properties of the input signal to the visual cortex and find new statistical structures that have not been processed in the retino-geniculate pathway. Using the idea that the system performs redundancy reduction of the incoming signals, we derive the lateral connectivity that will achieve this for a set of orientation-selective local circuits, as well as the complete spatial structure of a network composed of such circuits. We compare the results with various physiological measurements.

Spatial Decorrelation in Orientation Tuned Cortical Cells
In this paper we propose a model for the lateral connectivity of orientation-selective cells in the visual cortex based on informationtheoretic considerations. We study the properties of the input signal to the visual cortex and find new statistical structures which have not been processed in the retino-geniculate pathway. Applying the idea that the system optimizes the representation of incomi...
متن کاملAssociative Decorrelation Dynamics in Visual Cortex
This paper outlines a dynamic theory of development and adaptation in neural networks with feedback connections. Given input ensemble, the connections change in strength according to an associative learning rule and approach a stable state where the neuronal outputs are decorrelated. We apply this theory to primary visual cortex and examine the implications of the dynamical decorrelation of the...
متن کاملcient Stereo Coding in the Multiscale Representation 1 To be published in Network : Computation in Neural Systems
Stereo images are highly redundant; the left and right frames of typical scenes are very similar. We explore the consequences of the hypothesis that cortical cells | in addition to their multiscale coding strategies (Li and Atick 1994a) | are concerned with reducing binocular redundancy due to correlations between the two eyes. We derive the most e cient coding strategies that achieve binocular...

متن کاملRole of inhibition in the specification of orientation selectivity of cells in the cat striate cortex.
Mechanisms supporting orientation selectivity of cat striate cortical cells were studied by stimulation with two superimposed sine-wave gratings of different orientations. One grating (base) generated a discharge of known amplitude which could be modified by the second grating (mask). Masks presented at nonoptimal orientations usually reduced the base-generated response, but the degree of reduc...
